Acton Park Bandstand
Project Idea
Project Date(s): September 2017 to September 2019
A bandstand for the 21st Century to inspire future generations of Acton!
Acton in 1905 had a bandstand in its park, but in 2017 it does not. But Acton has many musicians of all ages. We think we should design a new bandstand for Acton Park an ask local people to help build it, including young people.
Many successful musicians were born or lived in the Acton area: Adam Faith, Roger Daltrey, Jay Kay from Jamiraqui, Lionel Bart – songwriter (Oliver etc..), Jon Entwhistle -The Who bassist, John McVie (joint founder of ‘Fleetwood Mac’). Ronnie wood, Freddy Mercury and Pete Townshend all went to Ealing Arts College. The Rolling Stones’ very first performance was in a small club underneath the ‘Better Half’ pub opposite Ealing Broadway station.
Ealing Junior Music School (EJAMS) at Twyford (only 1mile from Acton Park regularly has 400 local children between the ages of 6 and 11 learning and performing every Saturday morning.
Acton park had a bandstand at the start of the 20th Century. It is not clear to us why it was removed, nor when. The original location is now a flowerbed. In the design of the new bandstand, we will apply contemporary thinking to an old idea, incorporating modern design ideas, materials and state-of-the-art acoustics to create an inspiring structure that fits perfectly into the part environment.
