West Ealing Neighbours’ Abundance
Completed Project
Project Date(s): January 2015 to December 2015
The West Ealing Neighbours Abundance project is part of a national movement to make use of surplus and unwanted local fruit. We will pick or collect surplus and unwanted fruit from public land, back gardens and allotments and put it to good use. We always try to give some away locally, then get cooking to make delicious fruit cordials, jams, jellies and chutneys and if we have enough apples and pears we send them off jor juicing. We sell our Abundance produce at local events throughout the year and even supply one or two local shops.
There’s lots of ways to help out with our Abundance project:
1. Fruit picking
- Help make our ever-popular elderflower cordial by joining our elderflower picking parties in May.
- Join our blackberry picking teams throughout late summer and autumn
- Help us pick apples and pears in September and October. You can also help us transport the apples to the juicing company in the Chilterns and collect the bottles.
2. Cooking
We are always looking for people interested to learn how to make jams, jellies and chutneys. We can teach you and enable you to join our small team who make our produce which gets sold throughout the year.
3. Selling at local events
We take stalls at a number of local events such as the Hanwell Carnival, West Ealing SoundBite Festival, Christmas fairs etc and we need volunteers to help us staff these stalls and sell our produce.
4. Help manage our community orchard in Walmer Gardens
We have taken on the running of a neglected orchard in Walmer Gardens and we need help with:
- weeding and cutting back vegetation
- strimming the grass regularly from spring to autumn
- helping prune the trees in the winter
- picking the apples in September and October
5. Help publicise Abundance through our blog and develop our presence on social media.
